Are you tired of each of your students viewing their textbook simply as a reference book. That ends now. This book is different. It is very readable. The textbook is written like the author is sitting next to the student, with a pencil in hand, teaching them organic chemistry. Using humor and simple language, this organic chemistry textbook does not read like most others, and that is intentional. Students love the conversational writing style.
Pushing electrons is emphasized. Blue arrows are used to show the movement of the electrons. See the Chapter 8 preview to see how electron movement is creatively introduced.
There is an answer key for all of the in-chapter exercises. Students are encouraged to read the text, answer all exercises as they encounter them, and check their answers to make sure they are understanding. End-of-chapter problems are available (without answers provided to the students) for faculty to assign as homework.
Once students have learned the functional groups, they are ready to learn IR and MS. Having this chapter so early in their organic careers allows students to obtain more interesting spectroscopic data in the labs instead of only collecting boring melting points. We can then use IR throughout the year giving our students much more practice. Besides, spectroscopy puzzles are fun!

Dr. Wallace's textbook "Organic Chemistry" is a great text for an undergraduate organic chemistry course. The concept oriented approach allows students to learn organic chemistry without dealing with many disconnected terms. I am a retired medicinal chemist that found using this textbook my first year a great experience. The figures for the concepts are easily understood and his writing style results in a ready understanding of the concepts being discussed.
This textbook was indeed a great help. I loved the examples that were used to help me clearly understand the concepts. The practice problems were a big help!
